FAQ’s

Church Entranceway

You may be new to the Riverbend Area or maybe you’re just looking for a new place to worship.  We’ve compiled some of the common questions people may ask when they are considering visiting a new church:

How do I get to Godfrey First United Methodist Church?

We’re easy to find, at 1100 Airport Road in Godfrey (map).   There is a convenient cul-de-sac drop-off, located at the north end of the church, for easier handicap church sanctuary access. Handicap parking spaces are available in the lot.

What times are worship services?

Traditional service starts at 8:30 a.m.

Please pick up a hymnal as you enter the sanctuary.

Contemporary, or mosaic, service begins at 10:45 a.m.

Our choir, praise band, and sometimes both, will lead us in music.  Song lyrics and the people’s responses are projected on the walls.

Occasionally, we will have a combined 10:00 a.m. service for special programs like our Easter Cantata, presented by our choir and normally held on Palm Sunday.  Please click this link to the church calendar or call the church office at (618) 466-3624 to confirm.

Is there Sunday school?

Sunday school is available for all ages, pre-school through “seasoned” adult, from 9:35-10:30 a.m. in the education wing.

What will happen when I arrive?

You’ll be greeted at the front door of the sanctuary and offered a bulletin that lists the order of worship, the songs and the activities for the day and week. For children, an usher or greeter can direct you to Kids’ Korner where you can pick up a small, red-quilted activity bag if you’d like something to help occupy them. Sit wherever you would like and feel free to ask an usher or greeter any questions that you may have.

Is there a nursery?

A nursery, staffed with licensed caregivers, is available for infants through 4 years of age from 9:30 a.m. through the second worship service. You can take your baby/toddler to the nursery, located in the education wing to the left of the sanctuary at any time, or keep your child with you in church.  Also, there is a loveseat in the women’s education wing restroom, as well as a changing table, and that restroom and the nursery have audio of the worship service.

Where does my pre-school/elementary-school child go?

Children stay with their parents until shortly into the service, when Pastor invites the children to come forward for “Children’s Chat.”  No worries if you have a shy little one, you are welcome to come forward with them!  After this time, the children will be led to the education wing for J.A.M., our interactive “Jesus and Me” worship time.  For safety reasons, a parent must personally pick up their child following service; children are not allowed to leave on their own.

What should I wear?

Most people wear what they wear to work or school.  Some dress up a bit, some are more casual.  You are welcome to come however you are comfortable.

Do you have Holy Communion?

Generally on the first Sunday of the month, we serve communion.  Anyone who accepts God as their Lord and Savior is welcome to take communion, and we encourage children to take part as well.  You don’t have to have been baptized or be a member of this church (or any church).

What happens after service?

After service, everyone has an opportunity to personally meet the Pastor as you exit.

Do you have Bible Study?

Currently, we have two bible study groups:

  • Tuesdays at 6:15 a.m. (yes, that’s 6:15 in the morning!) at Godfrey McDonald’s
  • Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. – “Talking with God” in the church conference room

Do you have a Youth Program?

The GPS Youth Ministry (GPS) is a middle & high school age youth group. The group meets Sunday evenings from 6 to 7:30 PM. This group is very active and can be followed on Facebook.

Ignite is a community wide, non-denominational middle school youth choir who, through its young voices, is committed to shining the light of Christ before others in song, speech, conduct, love and faith.  For further information, please contact the church office or Joe Leonard at 618-973-2244.  Follow the Ignite Choir on Facebook.

Do you have Vacation Bible School?

Every summer we host a vacation Bible school for all children pre-K through 5th grades who are looking for fun activities and to learn how Christ can be a part of their lives through this activity.

What if I want to be baptized or confirmed?

Please contact the church office and ask to speak with the pastor, who will be happy to meet with you.

What if I want to learn more about The United Methodist Church and Godfrey First?

Membership classes are held a couple of times a year, offering information and the opportunity to join, if you wish.  Call the church for more information or speak with the Pastor.

“If you believe that Jesus Christ is your Lord and Savior, that he died and rose again to save you from your sins, then you are not a visitor in this house, you are not a stranger in this house, you are simply family we haven’t met yet.  We would love for you to come worship with us.”       ~  Pastor Steve Friese
